Difference Between BB Cream, CC Cream & DD Cream

Hello Everyone,

In recent times, the beauty market is flooded with an array of alphabetical creams. I am talking here about the BB creams, CC creams and DD creams[Yes, DD creams do exist, but as of now they are available overseas only. But I have no doubt that they will flood the Indian markets soon]. So, with all the alphabetical music-chair happening in the cosmetic industry, it can be really confusing as to what all those alphabets stands for and more importantly, which of those formulations will suit your skin type the best. So today, I will be talking about the differences between BB creams, CC creams and DD creams and try my best to explain which of those might be the best formulations for your skin.

History of BB, CC and DD Creams: It is said that BB creams were first formulated by German Dermatologists, who prescribed it to their patience's who underwent cosmetic surgery because BB creams were supposed to protect and improve the skin yet give light coverage to cover up the surgery scars. Then, it was introduced into Korean markets where women went crazy over its claims and it was rumored to be the secret behind flawlessness of Korean actresses. In the recent years, BB cream were introduced into western and Indian markets. Following the popularity of BB creams in Korea, CC creams and more recently DD creams were introduced in the Asian markets which eventually made into the western markets.

BB creams:

BB in BB creams stand for blemish balm/beauty balm. BB cream is supposed to be an all-in-one product. That means, it claims to have the benefits of serum, moisturizer, sunscreen, foundation... etc, in a single tube. So instead of spending time and money on all those products, you can use 1 single product. Depending on different companies, the benefits of each BB cream varies. BB creams don't come in a lot of shades, but most of them are designed to oxidize to match the skin-tone of the user. That means, even if a particular BB cream doesn't match your skin tone, it will automatically adjust to your skin tone once you apply it. Magic? Maybe. As far as I know, these oxidizing BB creams are available only in Asian market. The western and Indian BB creams don't claim to match the users skin tone on application.

Coverage: They provide sheer coverage similar to a tinted moisturizer.

Finish: The finish of most BB creams is dewy, since it has moisturizing properties.

Who should use it: People with normal to dry skin will benefit the most form BB creams as these are moisturizing, has SPF and gives sheer coverage.

CC Creams:

CC in CC creams stand for color correction. CC creams are marketed as Color correcting creams which is supposed to correct discolorations left behind by acne scars, sun damage, etc. at the same time it moisturizes the skin and protects it from sun. Again, depending on different companies, the added benefits of each CC cream varies. But all of them are formulated to correct the discolorations on the skin, no matter what their added benefits are.

Coverage: CC creams provides more coverage than a BB cream but a lot less than a foundation.

Finish: The finish of a CC cream is matte. It is also supposed to control excessive oil production in the skin.

Who should use it: Women with oily, acne prone skin with imperfections such as acne marks will benefit the most from CC creams.

DD creams:

More recently, the Korean markets were flooded with DD creams. DD in DD creams stand for Daily Defense or Dynamic Do-all Cream[shouldn't it be DDA cream then?]. DD cream is supposed to have the combined benefits of BB and CC creams with the added advantage of anti-aging properties. That means, it will moisturize, protect your skin from sun damage, reduce discoloration but at the same time provide anti-aging benefits such as reduction of fine-lines and wrinkles. Its more like a tinted anti-aging cream.

Coverage: They provide more coverage than a BB cream but a lot less than a foundation.

Finish: Since they provide anti-aging benefits, they are dewy in finish.

Who should use it: Mature women with fine lines can benefit from DD cream.

That covers it all. Some of the most popular BB creams in India are from Garnier, maybelline, revlon. But, everyday I see a new BB cream being launched by a different company here. When it comes to CC creams, Lakme CC cream is the the only popular CC cream in India so far[as far as I know]. DD creams are yet to be launched in India.

I am waiting for the launch of EE creams, FF creams,  GG creams, HH creams.........................and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

I hope this helped,
xoxo
