How To Cure Adult Acne

Acne during teenage years: Normal.
Acne during your 20’s: Awkward.

Most of us have acne during teenage years and we don’t feel that awkward about it because its considered to be normal. Of course we do everything in our possibility to get rid of them[in my case running to a dermatologist every once in a while], but still we don’t feel that awkward about it because most of our peers have the same issue.

Adult Acne: How To Get Rid Of It

But when you start getting acne in your 20’s it becomes right pain in the……. backside. One reason being that most of your peers who had acne as teens start having perfectly normal skin come 20’s. It feels like you are the only one on the planet with acne issues. But its not true, many of us suffer from acne as a tween too.

Causes For Adult Acne: Main reason for adult acne is hormonal imbalance. But there are other reasons too: have you started work and are stressing out more[raises hand], have you been ignoring your skin and not washing your face at night[raises hand again]. Have you been using products[foundations, moisturizers] which are clogging your oily skin? As a teen, I remember taking care of my skin religiously. Mainly because I had all the time in the world to obsess over my skin and body. But once I started working, the amount of time I had[have] for myself reduced drastically. Other things started taking priority and taking care of my skin dint seem that important anymore. Result: Adult acne.

Acne during adult years is more difficult to get rid of than teen years mainly because, as a adult your skin is not just oily but it seems to get dry faster. So its a task of drying out acne at the same time maintaining the moisture balance of the rest of the skin.

How To Cure Adult Acne:

I will categorize adult acne into 2 types:
  • Severe Adult Acne
  • Mild Adult Acne

1. Severe Adult Acne:

I will strongly recommend you to check out There they have something called the “Regimen” which instructs you to follow a routine to achieve clear skin. The link: Check out the video guide and the instructions there.
To Summarize The Regimen:
1. Wash face very gently using a gentle cleanser. Do NOT rub or be harsh.
2. Pat dry, again be very gentle.
3. Apply 2% or 4% benzoyl peroxide cream[Eg. Brevoxyl Cream] all over the face.
4. Apply moisturizer all over the face.

Repeat the entire process morning and night. The key is to be very gentle. You should also increase the dosage of benzoyl peroxide cream after every week. Check out the instructions in for detailed information on The Regime. This will definitely work if you are suffering from severe adult acne. It has worked for me in the past.

2. Mild Adult Acne:

Once you get rid of severe acne, the chances are you will suffer from mild adult acne once in a while. I suffer from it every now and then. The main reason being that I get lazy and skip washing face at night. For those suffering from mild adult acne, I strongly recommend using La Roche Posay Effaclar Astringent[review here], followed by La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo[review here], in the morning and night after cleansing your face. The 2 used together can seriously combat mild adult acne without causing dryness. Read the posts about the individual reviews[here and here] that I have done to fully understand how they work. I don’t want to write a huge post again, since I have already dedicated each of those products a separate review. They have helped me and I know many people swear by them.

I hope this helped,
